We have been working with the Mama Shujaa (Warrior Women) and SIFE students from University of Western Australia for past 18 months. 29 Feb saw the launch of Kioo Cafe -- a dream come true for women who have been earning extremely small incomes (about $3 per week), now able to earn the same for each day worked at Kioo Cafe (not taking into account profit which we look forward to) -- it means "Mirror" to indicate cleanliness and reflection of the power of women. With the help of friends and the local community it is now open for business!!! We wish them well and will continue to monitor progress.

JBP just returned from 1 month in Korogocho Slum, Nairobi ... saw the launch of our Kaya Second Study Center for the children in Highridge and Githathuri villages - children are using it now, there is a resident teacher who helps with homework and earns an income giving private tutoring. Brought them some books from Aust, waiting for electricity to be connect but all systems go. Lots of dancing and blessing by the local Iman and the priest augurs for bright futures for the children.

“This is a party—and we’re here to Be Kids!” With these words, guest-of-honour, Professor David Allbrook, set the tone for the Be Kids’ 2009 Celebration Dinner & Dance on 2 May 2009. Professor Allbrook has worked extensively in Africa improving medical education.

The 2009 BE KIDS annual celebration drew a crowd of members and supporters to the Royal Australian Airforce Association Club for an evening of music, dance, entertainment and an auction of artwork by children living in the Korogocho Slum in Nairobi. Thanks to the generosity of BE KIDS members, supporters and raffle prize donors, the Celebration Dinner & Dance raised $5,810 for our projects

After three years of wonderful work, Julia Hayes will be leaving the Board. Julia has provided invaluable assistance fostering and maintaining BKA’s relationship with Rotary which has helped us realize our project goals. We are grateful for Julia's commitment, support and advice and pleased that she will be continuing on as a member of BKA. We look forward to welcoming our new Board member at the AGM.

Help Make the 2009 Annual Community Fair a Success

Calling all Members and Friends, we need your help to make this year’s annual fundraising event on 14 November the most successful BE KIDS fair ever!

We still need volunteers, prize donations and help promoting the event. Please spread the word online and offline to everyone you know about this kid-friendly day of fun and fund-raising. There will be fabulous food, entertainment, activities and items for sale. Proceeds will support BKA’s projects.
